Chase who was Secretary of the Treasury in the Lincoln administration, later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and a leading abolitionist within government before the Civil War. Growing up in the shadow of her elder sister Kate Chase Sprague, Janet became a children's book author and illustrator.
