Published 6:53 PM EST Dec 17, 2015When the idea came to him about doing a benefit concert for an organization that helps women and children in India, Burlington musician Bob Wagner knew it was time to aim big to raise the nonprofit’s profile.' We wanted the concert that started all benefit concerts,” Wagner said. “That concert, I know that people know it.”Before Live Aid or Farm Aid or countless other rock concerts that raise money for good causes, former Beatle George Harrison decided to do a fundraiser in 1971 to help a war-ravaged nation in South Asia. “The Concert for Bangladesh” featured performances by Harrison, Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Leon Russell and other music legends at Madison Square Garden in New York City. According to The Concert for Bangladesh website, the resulting George Harrison Fund for UNICEF continues to raise money for Bangladesh 14 years after Harrison’s death.
APWagner chose to restage “The Concert for Bangladesh” with his fellow Burlington-area musicians, led by Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band, the group for which Wagner plays guitar. The fundraiser Saturday at Higher Ground is a benefit for Maher and the nonprofit organization’s work in India, which shares a border with Bangladesh. The South Burlington concert will feature appearances by Dwight & Nicole, The DuPont Brothers, Seth Yacovone, Lowell Thompson and more.“The Concert for Bangladesh” happened almost a decade before Wagner, 35, was born. He said he first heard about Harrison’s event about 10 years ago and kept it in the back of his mind for the past three or four years as he plunged into a series of Burlington-area concerts dedicated to paying tribute to renowned musicians or albums. He remembers his first reaction upon hearing the music from “The Concert for Bangladesh”: “Wow, this is a really magical event.”Wagner figures he has organized and performed at more musical tributes than anyone in the Burlington area, ranging from Dylan and The Band to the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Jimi Hendrix’s “Band of Gypsies” and the Rolling Stones “Exile on Main St.” album.

Those shows have been fun parties, Wagner said, but this time he wanted to do a tribute that also helps a worthy cause. KEVIN HURLEY/for the FREE PRESSHe had worked once before with Maher when he, Wright and other local musicians performed at a “Metronome for Maher” fundraiser at Club Metronome in Burlington. That concert raised money to send children from India to a leadership conference in New Mexico; this one will direct funds to U.S. COURTESYShe said Maher built its first safe home for women in 1997 and now has 37 structures, mostly children’s homes. The mission of Maher, according to the organization’s website, “is to help destitute women, children and men from all over India exercise their right to a higher quality of life, irrespective of gender, caste, creed or religion.”Keepin, 31, grew up in Burlington and New Mexico and is a nurse at the Community Health Center in Burlington.
She travels to India every two years to volunteer for Maher and will return in January. She said she offers nursing and office-work assistance and plays with some of the 860 children in the care of Maher, which has approximately 160 people on staff. She and Wagner described Kurien as a force of nature with a passion for helping those in need. “Sister Lucy is an absolutely fascinating rock star of a human being,” said Wagner, who has met Kurien on two of her visits to the United States. “You can’t help but want to do something, anything, to have just a little bit more of that in your life.”. KEVIN HURLEY/for the FREE PRESSWagner traveled to India about 10 years ago and said it changed his view of the world, leading him toward a greater desire to help people. “It was the first time I’d ever seen poverty like that in the world,” he said.“The Concert for Bangladesh” tribute is scheduled for Saturday because it was convenient for Higher Ground’s schedule as well as that of the musicians taking part, according to Wagner.

He said it’s also appropriate timing less than a week before Christmas, in the midst of the season of giving. All proceeds after expenses and from the sale of Maher-made crafts at the show will support the Indian organization.“The fact that it’s part of the holidays, that’s the spirit,” Wagner said.Musicians will be paid for their performances Saturday.
