Private Label ResearchOne sidenote:Fred seems to be correct in identifying the name 'Irion'- but having checked Wayne Schlitt's Elgin pages (and the Nawcc site, which also has references to this firm), I found that he seems to have misinterpreted the name as Prion.Therefore I found references to 'Prion and Girardet:' of Louisville Ky. On several private label watches listed in his database.The name Irion seems to me much more likely, as I found a reference to an Irion jewelers in Kentucky, including a business card, possibly from the 1930's or 1940's for a 'Matt Irion & Sons' of Louisville Ky.Item number.Modersohn.

We (Ed and I) don't have any other reports of movements in the first hundred of the run (13,476,001 - 13,476,100). We'd love to find out if these all had private label dials, especially loaner dials.

So, if anybody has a movement and dial from that serial number range to report, now would be a good time. Of course dial swapping might have affected these.The run (13,476,001 - 13,477,000) is nominally a run of grade No. Nevertheless, serial number 13,476,195 is marked 'Father Time.' The other eight reported movements from the run in our data base are above 13,476,201 and seem to be marked 'No.

So, again, if anybody has a movement from the serial number range 13,476,101 - 13,476,201 to report (marked No. 349 or Father Time, or something else), now would be a good time for that was well.Thanks. Figured that name couldn't be too common so worth a shot. In the 1880 census I found a Andrew Thalhofer listed as a watchmaker and living in Chicago, Ill. He was listed as living in the household of his father and only 14 at the time so must have been an apprentice.

In the 1920 census there is an Andrew Thalhofer (age 54) listed as a jewelery store manager in Chicago, Ill. There is no listing for Andrew Thalhofer in the 1890, 1900, or 1910 census so now the question is where did he go for 40 years?Gosh I love private labels.Joe. Re: Private Label ResearchA recent post about possible earliest private label Elgins stirred a memory of one posted about six years ago. I snagged the picture at the time but failed to request permission to use it and can't even recall which board it came from.

Although I don't feel I can re-post the image I can describe it. It is a model 1, 18-size, full-plate, keywind movement that is at least jeweled on the top plate (burnished settings). The serial number appears to be in the 7-thousands although the image is rather fuzzy. Other markings on the plates (top plate and barrel bridge) are entirely in Kanji characters and I am guessing this was for the Chinese or Japanese market. A pagoda is engraved on the balance cock. Does anyone know who may own this watch today?
